Nicosia, Cyprus. Maccabi Tel Aviv formally requested on Tuesday that Cyprus host its EuroLeague home games, according to a letter sent by the Israeli basketball club to President Nikos Christodoulides.

The government has not provided details of discussions with the club, citing security considerations.

Venues under consideration

Two venues are understood to be under consideration: the Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria stadium in Nicosia and the Spyros Kyprianou sports centre in Limassol.

Maccabi’s recent participation in the Neophytos Chandriotis tournament in Nicosia tested facilities, accommodation, transport and policing arrangements required for regular fixtures.

Previous request and security concerns

The proposal follows reports that Cyprus rejected a similar request from Maccabi in June 2025.

At the time, Phileleftheros reported that police had raised concerns over their ability to guarantee the safety of the events and meet the operational demands of hosting high-risk sporting fixtures.

Maccabi had proposed flying supporters to and from Cyprus on the day of matches, alongside enhanced security measures.

Earlier matches in Cyprus

Maccabi was among five Israeli basketball teams that staged home matches in Cyprus after the October 7 Hamas attack, with games played behind closed doors.

The government’s position on hosting such fixtures later changed amid security concerns.
