Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has reported a surge in applications, with its medical school accepting 20 per cent of applicants.

NKUA said admissions were based on strict quality and academic proficiency criteria, while evaluations for other departments remained underway.

Applications and admissions

The university said obtaining a medical school place involved strong competition among candidates, with successful applicants selected under strict criteria.

It said there had also been high interest in all academic units, with hundreds of applications submitted. Final evaluations for applications to other departments are ongoing.

Staff and facilities

According to NKUA, professors at its Cyprus branch are the same academics who teach in the corresponding parent departments in Athens.

The university also announced plans to recruit additional professors who will be based exclusively at the Cyprus branch.

NKUA said its facilities and laboratories in Cyprus have been completed and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

Student accommodation

The university said access to newly built student dormitories had been secured on what it described as particularly favourable financial terms, aiming to prevent housing from becoming an additional obstacle for students and their families.

NKUA’s Cyprus branch opened in downtown Nicosia in 2025 and has a dedicated student residence in the old town.
