Nicosia, Cyprus. A public statement describing the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (Oev) as the country’s largest and “truly independent” employers’ organisation has prompted an internal response from the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) and a reply from Oev’s leadership.

Social media post and Keve internal letter

The exchange followed a social media post by Oev general director Michalis Antoniou stating that Oev is the largest and truly independent employers’ organisation in the country, a remark that unsettled parts of the business community.

According to a report in Politis, Keve president Stavros Stavrou responded in a lengthy internal letter dated February 26, addressed to collaborators and members, many of whom are also Oev members. Stavrou said members had contacted him asking what Antoniou meant by “truly independent” and whether it implied Keve lacked independence.

Stavrou wrote that organisations serving common interests must operate independently and free from conflicts of interest, with decisions reflecting the common good of members and society. He also said the chamber of commerce is truly independent, while suggesting that members themselves should assess other organisations that claim independence.

Oev response and call for cooperation

Oev president George Pantelidis responded by criticising Stavrou’s note as insulting to Oev leadership, part of which overlaps with Keve’s own leadership.

Pantelidis referred to regional instability and said that, amid unpredictable threats and asymmetric challenges, Stavrou’s priority was an offensive against Oev. He described remarks in the letter as petty, while emphasising Oev’s commitment to continued cooperation with Keve for the benefit of businesses and the wider economy.

Pantelidis also called for collaboration beyond labour issues, citing recent joint efforts as a message that business interests are united, and warned against actions that could undermine cooperation or support for enterprises.
