Kyrenia, Cyprus. One person remains in hospital six days after a passenger ferry sank off the coast of Kyrenia, while search-and-rescue operations continue for 15 people who remain unaccounted for.
Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel said 131 of the 132 people initially admitted to public and university hospitals had been discharged, with no victims remaining in intensive care.
Hospital treatment
Ustel said the remaining inpatient’s health was rapidly improving.
All 239 survivors were transferred to hospitals across the north after being brought ashore, with four people initially admitted to intensive care units, he said.
He said 21 ambulances and 63 personnel were dispatched to the port, while 25 doctors and 30 nurses provided first aid at the scene. State, university, military and private hospitals were placed on alert.
According to Ustel, 139 doctors and around 200 nurses and healthcare workers have been on duty throughout the response.
Deaths and missing people
As of Saturday evening, 13 people had been confirmed dead as a result of the accident, while 15 remained missing, Ustel said.
He said search-and-rescue efforts were continuing around the clock.
Identification procedures
Some relatives of the 15 missing people were taken from Kyrenia’s new port, where they had been awaiting news, to provide DNA samples to assist with the identification of bodies recovered from the sea.
Ustel said DNA analysis would be used alongside visual and other identification methods to establish the identities of recovered remains.
