Paphos, Cyprus. Environmental protection, water resources management, infrastructure and the establishment of a new animal shelter were discussed at a meeting on Friday between Environment Commissioner Elias Myrianthos and Paphos district self-government organisation (EOA) president Charalambos Pittokopitis.

Pittokopitis said the EOA was ready to provide every possible facility to secure the permits needed for the animal shelter project.

Water and sewage infrastructure

The meeting also addressed management of the sewage system and biological unit in Achelia, as well as desalination issues, with particular focus on the desalination plant in Polis Chrysochous.

Pittokopitis requested the commissioner’s assistance in accelerating procedures for the installation and operation of the plant and in securing government funding for a rainwater management network in the area.

He said approval had already been granted to begin work on a sewage system in Polis Chrysochous. The EOA considered it appropriate to combine the sewage project with construction of the rainwater network.

Parallel construction requested

Pittokopitis said it was absurd to excavate roads for the sewage network and then repeat the work two or three years later for the stormwater network.

According to Pittokopitis, the Paphos road and highway authority sought funding for the two projects to be carried out in parallel, limiting costs, inconvenience to residents and repeated interventions in the road network.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain cooperation and communication between the Paphos EOA and the commissioner to improve basic infrastructure in the district.
