Paralimni centre redevelopment secures planning permission

Paralimni, Cyprus. Paralimni-Deryneia municipality has secured planning permission for a redevelopment of Paralimni’s central core aimed at reshaping the town centre and supporting local commercial activity. The municipality said on Thursday that it received the permit on Monday, August 10.

Redevelopment plans

The project includes replacement of the existing road surface, construction and upgrading of pavements, tree planting, green spaces and service areas for shops and visitors.

Parking spaces will also be created under the scheme, which is intended to make the centre more accessible for residents, businesses and tourists.

The municipality said the project aims to create a modern, functional and accessible urban environment, improve residents’ daily lives, enhance commercial and social activity, and improve Paralimni’s image among visitors.

The design also seeks to highlight the town’s identity while respecting its history, traditions and residents’ collective memory.

Revised traffic approach

Under revised plans submitted in 2025, the municipal council dropped the original proposal for full pedestrianisation and decided to retain vehicle access through the centre.

Before submitting the plans, the municipality held a public consultation on traffic management in the area. The study included proposed one-way systems for Griva Digeni, Constantinoupoleos, Tassou Markou and Kolokotroni streets.

The proposals also included improvements to the existing paved area, new greenery, open squares and parking.

Funding

Financial estimates have changed as the design has evolved. A government programme announced in February 2025 allocated €11.2 million for the square and the wider town-centre redevelopment.
