Parties mark 30 years since killings of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou

Derynia, Cyprus. Political parties on Tuesday marked the 30th anniversary of the killings of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou, paying tribute to the two men and renewing calls for justice and the liberation of Cyprus.

Calls for accountability

In separate statements, Diko, Disy, Edek and Elam described the killings as enduring symbols of the island’s occupation and criticised the continued failure to bring those responsible to justice.

Diko focused on the anniversary of Solomou’s killing on August 14, 1996, three days after Isaac was beaten to death during an anti-occupation demonstration in Derynia.

The party said Solomou was killed because he challenged “the symbol of occupation and the violent division of his homeland”.

Historical significance

Diko noted that August 14 also marks the start of the second phase of the Turkish invasion in 1974, describing the coincidence as carrying heavy historical significance.

Thirty years later, the party said, images of Solomou’s killing continue to shock, while his killer has never been held accountable. It said his sacrifice demonstrated that “no bullet can execute the ideals of freedom and national dignity” and reaffirmed its commitment to a free and reunited Cyprus without Turkish occupation troops.

Party statements

Disy honoured the memory of both Isaac and Solomou, describing them as symbols of sacrifice, resistance and the struggle for freedom. It said the killings were not merely a tragic chapter in Cyprus’ history but a continuing reminder of the obligation owed to those who gave their lives and to their families, who have waited decades for justice.

The party pledged to continue pressing for the activation of international arrest warrants and for those responsible to be brought before the courts. It said that while no legal decision could undo the loss, justice could offer a measure of vindication for the victims’ families and Cypriot society.

Edek said Isaac’s sacrifice was a reminder of “who we are up against”, adding that the brutality of his killers should not be forgotten.

Elam also honoured Isaac, describing him as a symbol of self-sacrifice and patriotism. The party criticised the lack of accountability for his killing, which it said took place in the presence of UN peacekeepers, and called for those responsible to be arrested and punished.
