Limassol, Cyprus. Police have opened an investigation into reckless driving at the Ayios Athanasios roundabout, after a clip shared online showed a car drifting close to pedestrians and other vehicles.

What the video shows

The clip was posted on Sunday with the caption “Just Married”. It shows the driver drifting repeatedly around the roundabout, with thick smoke coming off the tyres. Fireworks are let off during the stunt, and several bystanders stand nearby filming.

One person appears to be standing on the roadway while the manoeuvres take place. The driver kept performing them near other vehicles on the road, which led to traffic congestion in the area.

Police response

When the Cyprus Mail asked about the incident, police confirmed that an investigation is under way. They initially said they had received no complaint or information about the incident before the video was posted online.

Police added that the viral video and its validity are also being investigated.

Wider context

Asked why there appear to be so many car incidents in the Limassol area, police replied that the problem exists across Cyprus.
