Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. Major infrastructure projects for Polis Chrysochous were discussed on Friday at a meeting between Mayor Yiotis Papachristofis, the municipal council and newly appointed Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis.

The municipality called on the ministry to advance existing commitments with determination and within agreed timelines.

Projects discussed

According to a municipal statement, the meeting examined the implementation of decisions and commitments already made for the region.

Projects discussed included the expansion of the Pomos fishing shelter to improve its infrastructure and functionality, a coastal footpath from the Polis camping site, and breakwaters along the coastal front of Chrysochous Bay.

The expansion of Latchi port and the installation of a desalination plant were also on the agenda. The municipality described the desalination plant as critical amid concerns over water supply.

Drainage and river works

The meeting also covered the construction of a sewage and rainwater drainage system, as well as progress in the design and delivery of works on the Ayios Yiannis river in Latsi.

The municipality said the projects were essential infrastructure for the region’s progress and future development. It said it would continue to monitor the ministry’s commitments and expected the new minister to implement them within the agreed timetable.

Development debate

The meeting took place amid continuing debate over the pace of development in the Latchi and Polis Chrysochous area, where major hotel and infrastructure schemes are under way or planned.

These include the Leonardo Club Latchi hotel, part of a reported €55 million investment, which has faced scrutiny after building permits were issued despite earlier findings of unauthorised construction.
