Vatican City, Vatican City. Pope Leo, 71, rested well overnight and ate breakfast as he continued recovering in hospital following lung cancer surgery, the Vatican said on Thursday.

Surgery and recovery

Leo was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent type of lung cancer. Doctors operated on Tuesday afternoon, removing his right lung’s lower lobe.

According to the Vatican, the operation was successful and involved no complications. It said Wednesday’s blood tests and chest X-ray produced findings consistent with normal recovery after surgery.

The Vatican has not disclosed how large the tumour was or whether cancer had reached neighbouring lymph nodes. Both are important in assessing the prognosis.

Additional information about Leo’s condition is expected on Thursday, although the pathology report could take several more days. His scheduled public appearances have been cancelled through October 20.

Trump and Vance offer support

US President Donald Trump joined worldwide expressions of support for the pope on Wednesday, despite having disagreed with Leo over several issues. Speaking to reporters, Trump said he wanted the pope to recover and wished him a speedy return to health.

Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism, also offered prayers. In a post on X, he asked God to give Leo strength during his recovery and expressed hope that the pope knew millions of American Christians were thinking of him.
