Kyiv, Ukraine. Russia attacked transport and logistics infrastructure in Ukrainian cities overnight with drones and ballistic missiles, but struck no energy targets on Tuesday. It was the first such day since US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire over the weekend.

Overnight strikes and casualties

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian attacks killed four people in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and injured at least 12 nationwide.

In western Ukraine, a missile landed slightly more than one kilometre from a facility supplying heat to a large part of Lviv.

The Ukrainian air force said surveillance had provided no advance warning before Russia launched six ballistic missiles towards Kyiv late on Monday. The absence of warnings prompted widespread concern in residents’ online comments, and the air force said it was investigating the reasons.

According to Ukrainian officials, the intelligence supplied by the United States includes information on preparations for ballistic missile launches.

Uncertainty over the energy ceasefire

The Russian defence ministry’s daily account of the overnight attacks did not list any Ukrainian energy facilities. Asked about the ceasefire, a Kremlin spokesman said contacts were continuing but offered no additional details.

Whether Russia had intentionally excluded energy infrastructure from its targets overnight into Tuesday remained unclear.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that Ukraine had refrained from attacking Russian refineries for two days following Trump’s announcement. He said Russia had nevertheless kept striking energy facilities and other critical infrastructure during that period. Six Ukrainian energy sites were hit by Russia on Monday.

Diesel deal and US pressure

Trump announced the ceasefire on Sunday, two days after declaring a deal removing US sanctions on Russian diesel exports. The arrangement would permit Russia to supply nearly 2 million metric tons of diesel, with the aim of reducing US fuel prices.

Reuters and other news organisations have reported that US officials threatened to stop sharing intelligence and selling weapons to Ukraine unless Kyiv ended its attacks on Russian oil refineries.

Trump has repeatedly attributed this year’s steep increase in US diesel prices to Ukrainian attacks that led Moscow to halt diesel exports. The price rise has created a political problem for his Republican party, with Congressional midterm elections three weeks away.

Most analysts, however, say Trump’s war in Iran has contributed far more to the increase.
