Nicosia, Cyprus. Sibling relationships can become some of the longest-lasting bonds in a person’s life, preserving shared childhood memories, family traditions and experiences as parents age and life changes.

These relationships can influence emotional and psychological development, while positive sibling bonds have been associated with greater emotional wellbeing and protection against loneliness and stress.

Shared history and emotional development

Siblings may be the only people who remember a childhood exactly as it was, including family concerns, Christmas mornings, inside jokes and traditions. For many people, brothers and sisters become keepers of a shared history and among their longest relationships, often lasting longer than relationships with parents, friends and, in some cases, partners.

“Sibling relationships often serve as a foundational blueprint for our emotional and psychological development,” licensed counselling psychologist Marios Shialos said. “Because siblings typically form strong emotional bonds from an early age, these relationships can deeply shape self esteem, emotional regulation and feelings of security as people grow up.”

Developing social skills

Shialos said siblings can also help people develop social skills through regular interaction in a familiar environment.

“By constantly practicing within this safe environment, we learn to cultivate empathy, master communication and navigate conflict, thus actively helping to refine the essential social skills needed for the outside world,” he said.

Research has linked positive sibling relationships with greater emotional wellbeing and suggested they may help protect against loneliness and stress.

Changing relationships over time

Sibling bonds often span decades, preceding spouses, careers and children, while encompassing childhood competition and later life milestones.

“Because they endure across so many developmental milestones, these bonds leave a profound imprint on how we connect with the world,” Shialos said.

He said early sibling relationships can combine affection with rivalry as children compete for attention, resources and independence.

“This creates a paradox where siblings are simultaneously best friends and primary rivals,” Shialos said.

In adulthood, many sibling relationships become more equal and less competitive, with siblings providing emotional support, practical assistance and a shared history.

“While not all relationships become closer, adulthood can bring greater understanding, acceptance and appreciation of each other’s experiences,” he said.

Warm sibling relationships have been associated with greater happiness, indicating that these bonds can remain significant throughout life.
