Seoul, South Korea. South Korea’s military said it fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line on the Eastern Front and returned to their side.

Military response

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the warning shots were fired in accordance with operational procedures. It did not provide the date of the incident.

“Our military is closely monitoring North Korean movements while maintaining a firm military readiness posture,” the JCS said.

Reported patrol incident

Yonhap news agency reported earlier that the warning shots had been fired last week, citing an unnamed source.

The agency said the incident was the first reported violation of the military demarcation line by North Korea this year and that the soldiers were likely patrolling when they crossed the line.

Yonhap reported that North Korean troops crossed the line 17 times last year.

Armistice status

The two Koreas remain technically at war, as the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

The North Korean embassy in Singapore did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
