Status of reported Board of Peace meeting in Cyprus remains unverified

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cypriot authorities were unable on Tuesday to verify whether the Board of Peace, reported to be meeting in Cyprus this week, had in fact convened on the island. It also remained unclear which arm of the organisation was due to meet.

Previous confirmation and report

Last week, the government confirmed that the meeting would be held in Cyprus following a Politico report that the Board of Peace would convene to “readjust its strategy”. The publication cited two senior EU officials involved in the arrangements as saying the meeting would take place at a resort in Cyprus.

One official told Politico that “Cyprus is not a co-organiser of the event, and it is not taking place at a political level. Cyprus was chosen by the executive committee.”

Government and police responses

The Cyprus Mail asked the government whether the meeting had begun and which arm of the Board of Peace was involved. A source said there was “no more information” on the matter.

The police, which would presumably be involved in security arrangements, were also contacted. A source said they would respond later, but no reply had been received by the time of writing.

Political reaction

The Akel spokesman could not be reached for comment. Akel was taking part in a protest against the Board of Peace outside the presidential palace on Tuesday evening.

Cyprus’ role

The government has sought to distance itself from the reported meeting, with the foreign minister saying that Cyprus was serving only as the venue.

Cyprus participates as an observer in the Board of Peace only in discussions concerning post-war governance and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, as endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 in November 2025.
