Nicosia, Cyprus. STYX Film Encounters is presenting First Encounters, a new cinema education programme for children, at Pantheon Theatre this autumn and winter. Organisers say the programme combines film showings with creative workshops over five Saturdays, concluding on December 19.

Learning to look beyond the screen

According to the organisers, the programme introduces children to cinema and filmmaking, with particular emphasis on developing critical viewing skills. With screens and media content now widespread, they say the aim is to help children understand how screen images are constructed, how they can be changed and how they influence audiences.

The organisers say every screening and workshop is a standalone event, allowing children to take part in a single activity or attend several.

Films on the programme

The next screening, scheduled for November 14, features Toy Story, released in 1995. The programme highlights its distinction as the first animated feature created entirely using computers and describes it, 30 years later, as a landmark in animation whose themes of friendship and jealousy resonate across age groups.

Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory follows on December 12, with the screening starting at 5.30pm.

Three workshops for younger viewers

The workshop series is intended for children aged 7 to 10. It opens on November 7 with What are movies?, exploring the filmmaking process and the work behind the images audiences see.

On November 28, How do movies guide emotions? examines the ways filmmakers shape viewers’ feelings through music, colour, framing and rhythm, helping children recognise those techniques.

The closing workshop, Stories across mediums, takes place on December 19. It considers which elements of a story change, and which remain, when it moves between different forms of storytelling.

Organisers say the workshops collectively seek to help children become active, thoughtful viewers who understand the material they watch.
