Three West Nile virus cases confirmed in north Cyprus
Three people tested positive for West Nile virus in the north, while seven cases and one death have been recorded in the Republic.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Three people have tested positive for West Nile virus in the north, the Turkish Cypriot ‘health ministry’ said on Tuesday. Seven confirmed cases have already been detected in the Republic, where one person has died.
Patients hospitalised and monitored
The Turkish Cypriot ‘health ministry’ said two patients who attended health institutions with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, sore throat, fever and fatigue were hospitalised on Monday and tested positive for the virus.
It said their general condition had improved by Tuesday and that neither patient was in a life-threatening condition.
A third person with no health complaints tested positive during routine blood tests on Tuesday, it added.
“The health status of all patients is being closely monitored,” it said.
Transmission and symptoms
The World Health Organisation says human infection with West Nile virus most often results from bites by infected mosquitoes.
According to the organisation, around 80 per cent of infections are asymptomatic, while the remaining 20 per cent develop West Nile fever.
