Trump appoints Truth Social adviser Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary
Donald Trump said Katie Zacharia will serve as White House press secretary following Karoline Leavitt’s departure in August, ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
Washington, United States. US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had appointed Katie Zacharia, a communications adviser for his Truth Social platform, as White House press secretary following Karoline Leavitt’s departure in August.
Appointment and response
Trump said Zacharia had an “unblemished record of support” and had been a “loyal and brilliant supporter.”
“I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary, as she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the Media, the American People, and my Administration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The New York Times first reported the appointment.
Zacharia welcomed the appointment in a social media post, saying she looked forward to “working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country” to communicate Trump’s message.
Midterm election context
The appointment places Zacharia at the centre of the White House’s public messaging operation in the final stretch before next month’s midterm elections, when voters will weigh Trump’s agenda and his party’s control of Congress.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 32%, the lowest of his political career, as fellow Republicans soured on his handling of the cost of living and the Iran war.
Links to Trump’s media operation
Zacharia’s selection underscores the close ties between Trump’s administration and his broader political and media operation.
In July, Trump Media announced that, for a fee, it would give banks and trading firms “the fastest” access to posts from influential Truth Social accounts, including the president’s. Trump’s posts often move global markets.
According to her LinkedIn page, Zacharia has worked since June as a senior communications adviser for Truth Social, the Republican president’s social media platform, and Trump Media & Technology Group, whose stock ticker is DJT.O.
She briefly served as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security before leaving in March.
