Port Huron, United States. US President Donald Trump intensified his attacks on Norway at a political rally yesterday, Sunday, saying Norwegian immigrants were unwelcome because he had not received a Nobel Peace Prize. His remarks came before midterm elections scheduled for next week.

Immigration remarks and Nobel criticism

Trump blamed immigration for recent unrest in France and said he would accept immigrants from certain countries, but excluded Norway because the Norwegian Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, had not awarded him the prize.

There was no sign that his administration was introducing an official policy change affecting Norwegian immigrants.

“Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” Trump said. He has previously used the same derogatory description for Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Earlier this month, Trump had characterised the decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize as a lasting blemish on Norway.

Norway stresses committee’s independence

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told national broadcaster NRK on Monday: “He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case,”

The foreign ministry offered no further comment. Requests for comment from the Norwegian Nobel Committee received no immediate response.

Norway’s economic standing

International Monetary Fund figures place Norway among the countries with the highest incomes when measured by per-capita GDP.

Norway’s sovereign wealth fund recorded an unprecedented first-half profit in 2026, earning 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns ($184.3 billion).
