Akrotiri, Cyprus. The British defence ministry has awarded American firm Acoustic Technologies a five-year, £552,239 (€644,242) contract to supply new air raid warning sirens for RAF Akrotiri and the adjacent village of Akrotiri.

Warning system

The British defence ministry said there is a need to supplement the air raid warning sirens currently in place at RAF Akrotiri.

It said the requirement is for sirens capable of covering RAF Akrotiri and Akrotiri village for community warning.

The new system will include distinct alert tones for air raids and imminent threats, followed by an all-clear siren. It will also provide live and recorded voice announcement functionality.

Contract details

The contract includes supply, commissioning, documentation, training, warranty and through-life support activities required to deliver and sustain the capability.

Acoustic Technologies is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and describes itself as a global leader in emergency communication and early warning systems and a provider of emergency notification solutions.

Further details of the contract are due to be published within the next month, in accordance with UK law.

Recent developments

The installation follows a year in which Akrotiri’s political salience was more pronounced than at any time this century. The base was hit by an Iranian-made drone on March 2.

Following the drone strike, President Nikos Christodoulides said on arriving at a European Council summit in March that Cyprus would hold an open and frank discussion with the British government over the future of the bases, heavily hinting that he would like them abolished.
