University of Cyprus denies discrimination allegations by visually impaired student and father

Nicosia, Cyprus. A visually impaired student and her father have accused the University of Cyprus of discrimination and inadequate support during her studies and practical training. The university denied the allegations on Tuesday.

Request for reassessment

The student is seeking a full reassessment of her practical training grades, saying she was evaluated without the accommodations needed to ensure equal participation. She is also asking for an independent committee to review all practical training courses, a written explanation of her grades and an investigation into whether the lack of adjustments affected the outcomes.

Concerns raised

She has also raised concerns about compliance with equality and non-discrimination principles, as well as whether similar cases involving other students were handled differently.

In a video posted on social media, her father said he had submitted a complaint alleging discrimination, victimisation and unequal treatment on the basis of disability. He said that despite providing medical documentation and external recommendations, the university did not fully implement the required accommodations.

University response

The University of Cyprus strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as unfounded. It said it systematically provides reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in line with its institutional framework.
