Rescue operation
The woman entered the sea with her daughters, aged 13 and 12, at about 6.20pm while waves remained rough.
Bystanders saw the three in difficulty and entered the water to assist them, bringing them ashore.
The mother was unconscious when she was pulled from the sea. Resuscitation efforts were made, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hospital treatment
The two girls were taken to Larnaca general hospital. The 13-year-old was later transferred to Makarios hospital in Nicosia because her condition was considered serious.
The 12-year-old was initially kept at Larnaca general hospital before also being transferred to Makarios hospital on Wednesday.
Family and police response
The family of five, all European nationals, had been at the beach when the incident occurred. The father remained on the beach with the couple’s third child, a boy, while the mother entered the sea with the two girls.
Police were alerted at about 6.20pm. The incident occurred shortly after the lifeguard service in the area had ended for the day.
