Zika Virus in Russia

Russian tourist, who was having her vacation in the Dominican Republic, was infected with Zika virus. This is the first instance of infection with such virus in Russian Federation.

According to the Russian authorities, only after few days after she returned, her condition has deteriorated, she had fever and rash.

Woman was admitted to the hospital and currently she is in the virus containment section. The test samples taken from her family members were negative.

Apparently, there is no vaccine for prevention or treatment of the virus. The disease is especially dangerous for pregnant women, because it causes reduction of the head size of the fetus.

Russian authorities has stated that due to climate, there is no risk of the spread of the virus.
