Photovoltaic panels in Cyprus: connection and cost calculations

How can I plan a domestic photovoltaic system and assess its cost-effectiveness under current conditions?

Photovoltaic panels in Cyprus: connection and cost calculations

Checked: 4 October 2026.

Start with the current terms and conditions

For a domestic solar power system in Cyprus, first check the installation rights, connection requirements and the contract for energy consumption and supply, then work out the costs. The number of sunny days alone does not determine the economic viability. A new system, an existing contract for a previous installation and an off-grid property each require different solutions.

Energy Service reports that the application period for the previous self-consumption scheme ended at the end of 2025, and that new schemes have been in operation since January 2026 under CERA Decision 02/2024. The old description of net metering cannot automatically be used as the terms and conditions for connecting a new project.

CERA explains separately the continuation of existing contracts under current schemes and the contractual arrangements governing the management and compensation of energy supplied under the new regime. Obtain the terms and conditions for your project from the network operator and your supplier. A promise from the installer to credit every kilowatt-hour generated does not replace these documents.

Assess the property and the right to install

Ask a specialist to check the available space, shading, roof structure, condition of the roof covering and electrical connection. The rated power of the panels is not the same as their constant output. Details regarding orientation, obstacles and technical constraints must be included in the quotation, rather than being replaced by a generic image of a solar-powered house.

Determine who owns the installation site and whether decisions by co-owners, permits or additional approvals are required. Special conditions apply to communal areas; a solicitor and a designer will check the applicable procedures. Ownership of a flat does not automatically confer the right to install equipment on the communal roof.

Distinguish between the existing mains supply, any proposed changes and the backup power supply. A standard grid-tied inverter does not, on its own, guarantee a power supply to the home in the event of a mains power cut. If a backup function is required, this is specified as a separate design solution incorporating compatible equipment and the necessary protective measures.

Understand your consumption profile

Compile the available consumption data for different seasons and times of day, taking into account permanent residents, air-conditioning units and other major loads. Daytime consumption affects the use of on-site generation. A house that is empty during the day and a property where equipment operates during the day may have different economic outcomes even with the same solar panels.

Ask for a monthly generation forecast, specifying the input data and losses. Assess separately how much energy is consumed immediately, how much is fed into the grid and how much is purchased later. Do not combine these volumes into a single ‘saving’ if the prices and contractual terms for calculating them differ.

For the battery, take into account its usable capacity, permissible operating modes, power losses, service life and the cost of future replacement. A larger battery does not always pay for itself and does not solve all backup power issues. Compare options with the same power consumption and clearly defined limitations, rather than just the total price of the package.

The connection undergoes a separate check

Request the current procedures for submission, technical specifications, inspection and authorisation from the distribution network operator. The project and application must be prepared with the involvement of qualified specialists. Payment for the equipment does not mean that the operator has already authorised the required capacity and the supply of electricity to the grid.

In the proposal, specify who is responsible for submitting the application, obtaining approvals, preparing the electrical protection and metering, and organising the necessary inspections. Specify which activities are charged for separately and who is responsible for rectifying any issues raised. Do not include commissioning until the required procedures have been carried out and the permissible operating mode has been confirmed.

The system must comply with the applicable technical specifications and safety regulations, including any specified output limitation or control, where required. Do not bypass safety devices in order to increase power output. Specific settings and tests are the responsibility of a competent installer and operator, and should not be carried out as a home experiment.

Calculate costs and revenue separately

The initial price includes the modules, the inverter, mounting brackets, installation, electrical work, the necessary approvals and any additional work on the roof. Please check the taxes, the warranty and what is excluded from the price. To compare, request quotes for the same scope of work from several suppliers and separate out any optional equipment.

The savings on your own energy consumption depend on the proportion of your energy purchase that is avoided, whilst compensation for energy supplied is subject to a separate contract. Fixed charges and certain fees may still apply. Do not deduct the entire future bill from the cost of the system, and do not assume that the price of the energy supplied is the same as the retail price without checking the terms and conditions.

The simple payback period is calculated based on the investment and the projected annual net profit; this forecast is not a guarantee. Take into account maintenance costs, potential equipment replacement, price fluctuations and supply constraints. Present a more conservative scenario alongside the main one, so that the decision does not depend on a single optimistic assumption.

Support and contract with the contractor

If you are considering a grant or a loan, check the current scheme, the applicant’s eligibility, the procedure to follow and the eligible expenses. An archived support page does not confirm that applications are currently being accepted. Do not treat the payment as received, and do not place a non-refundable order based solely on the seller’s assurance of future approval.

The contract must specify the equipment to be supplied, the scope of support, the timeframe, the terms of payment, the warranty and the service provision. Clarify who is responsible for the roof’s waterproofing and the system’s operational reliability following inspections. The manufacturer’s warranty on the module is distinct from the installation obligations and the promised savings.

Upon acceptance, you will receive the system documentation, the results of the required tests, approvals and instructions. Ask to be shown the safety monitoring of generation and the procedure for reporting faults. Access to the app is useful, but the generation schedule alone does not confirm the correctness of the grid connection or the commercial contract.

Check the results after commissioning

Compare measured generation, self-consumption, supply and purchases with the forecast for the same periods. To calculate the financial figures, use the actual terms of the account and contract. A drop in generation may be due to weather, shading, curtailment or a fault; the service determines the cause based on system data.

Check for any visible signs of damage and follow the maintenance instructions. Entrust work on the roof and on the electrical system to qualified professionals. Do not clean the modules or switch off the equipment in an unsafe manner simply to restore the figures in the app; prioritise diagnostics and safety first.

This update supersedes previous indicative prices and promises of a quick return on investment by verifying the current project. The result is a viable installation, clear contracts and calculations based on verified assumptions. Please check tariffs, programmes and technical procedures again before committing to the project and whenever there are changes to the system.
