Moving to Cyprus with a pet

How to prepare the microchip, rabies vaccination, passport or health certificate, blood test, arrival notice and transport.

Moving to Cyprus with a pet

In brief: The route depends on the animal, country of departure and whether movement is non-commercial. For a dog, cat or ferret, the sequence begins with identification and then rabies vaccination. Reversing it can invalidate the evidence.

Microchip and vaccination

The pet must be identified with a compatible microchip before vaccination or on the same demonstrable date. A primary rabies vaccination becomes valid after the prescribed immunity period; Veterinary Services explains the wait of at least 21 days. Check minimum age, booster validity and exact agreement of the microchip number across every document.

EU and third countries

An EU pet passport normally supports movement from a Member State. Entry from a third country uses an official health certificate and applicable declarations; a country outside the relevant list requires a rabies antibody titration at an approved laboratory with prescribed intervals. Since 16 September 2024 this test has applied to movements from Belarus and Russia. Recheck the list before travel.

Route and arrival notice

Pets may enter only through designated points. For arrival from a third country, notify the relevant District Veterinary Office of the date, time, flight or ship at least 48 hours in advance. Separately agree carrier rules, crate dimensions, connections and temperature restrictions. Airline requirements supplement, but do not replace, veterinary entry law.

Special cases and arrival

Non-commercial movement normally covers no more than five animals and travel linked to the owner or authorised person; another purpose may become commercial import. Certain dog breeds and cat hybrids are prohibited, and animals other than dogs, cats and ferrets may need an import permit. Retain all records after arrival, identify a veterinarian and check local registration.

Practical checklist

  • identify origin country and movement status;
  • confirm the microchip predates vaccination;
  • check passport, certificate and titre requirement;
  • notify the Veterinary Office by the deadline;
  • confirm carriage and crate rules with the carrier.

Create a veterinary history

First, check the microchip and its date in relation to the vaccination. Then apply the rules of the country of origin regarding vaccination, any necessary tests and the certificate. A broken sequence cannot be rectified retrospectively with a certificate.

Make a note of the cut-off dates for each step, allowing for time for laboratory tests, booster vaccinations and a visit to an official vet. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket until the schedule meets the requirements.

The owner’s name, microchip number and description of the animal must all match. The microchip scan is checked before the documents are issued. A single digit error could prevent the journey.

Route and carrier

Airline rules apply in addition to government requirements. Confirm whether your pet will travel in the cabin or the hold, along with the carrier size, weight, breed, temperature limits and any stopovers. The owner’s ticket does not guarantee a place for the pet without separate confirmation.

A transit country may have its own requirements, particularly when leaving the transit area or collecting luggage. A single ticket reduces the risk but does not exempt you from checks. Avoid short layovers and extreme heat.

When travelling in the hold, have the animal’s health assessed by a vet and prepare the carrier in advance. Sedatives should only be administered on professional advice. Label the carrier with your contact details without attaching anything that protrudes dangerously.

Certificate and notification

Use the form and deadlines applicable to your country of origin. A private vet and an official authority may have different roles. Obtain a signature and stamp in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

If prior notification is required, submit it by the deadline and keep a copy of the confirmation. Specify the actual flight and destination. Agree any changes to the route before departure.

Transporting multiple animals or commercial transport may fall outside the pet travel scheme. Do not split up the group. Check the regulations for the actual purpose of the journey and the number of animals.

Arrival and the first few weeks

Keep the originals to hand until the inspection is complete. Do not open the carrier in an unsecured area. In the event of a delay or refusal, follow the instructions of the veterinary service and the carrier.

Before arrival, prepare water, a safe place to stay, a local vet and a registration address if required. For the first few days, stick to the animal’s usual food and monitor its condition after the flight.

This article does not determine the animal’s fitness to fly. The decision is made by a vet based on the animal’s health, whilst clearance is granted by the relevant authorities and the carrier based on documentation and actual conditions.

A few days before departure, double-check the flight number, airport, check-in time for the animal, and the contact details for cargo or special assistance. The standard passenger check-in desk may not accept the pet carrier. Find out where the veterinary inspection takes place on arrival and who will meet the animal if the procedures are carried out in different areas.

Prepare a contingency plan for unforeseen circumstances: flight delays, extreme heat, refusal to accept the pet carrier, expired documentation or lost luggage. Make a note of the contact details for the carrier, the vet and the relevant authorities. Do not change your route to include a third country until you have checked its transit requirements and ensured that your pet can be safely cared for there.
