How to open a bank account in Cyprus

How to choose a regulated institution, prepare KYC evidence, explain tax residence and source of funds, and compare charges.

How to open a bank account in Cyprus

In brief: A bank assesses more than a passport: account purpose, residence, expected activity, source of funds and customer risk all matter. There is no guaranteed universal checklist or timeline. AML rules set the framework, while each institution requests evidence for the individual profile.

Choose the account category first

A personal payment account, a self-employed account and a corporate account serve different purposes and require different evidence. Check the institution in the Central Bank of Cyprus register and ask whether it serves your residence and activity profile. Do not use a personal account for business where its terms prohibit this, and do not treat an introductory call as approval.

Personal KYC evidence

Expect valid identification, address evidence, tax numbers and countries of residence, immigration status, occupation and proof of income or accumulated wealth. A bank may request employment contracts, tax returns, statements, a sale agreement or inheritance records. The documents should form a consistent explanation of anticipated incoming and outgoing payments.

Companies and beneficial owners

For a company, prepare incorporation, registered-office, director and secretary, shareholder, memorandum and articles certificates, the account-opening resolution, the UBO chain and a business description. Expect checks on controlling individuals, counterparties, countries and forecast turnover. Incorporation does not oblige a bank to accept the company as a customer.

Fees, refusal and complaints

Before signing, obtain charges for maintenance, cards, SEPA, international transfers, cash and foreign exchange, plus closure terms. Answer additional-document requests through an official channel and retain copies. Use the bank’s complaint route first and then check the Financial Ombudsman’s remit. Never try to overcome a refusal with false information or another person’s address.

Practical checklist

  • select an institution from the official register;
  • describe the account purpose and expected turnover;
  • prepare address, tax-status and source-of-funds evidence;
  • compare the complete tariff rather than one monthly fee;
  • send sensitive evidence only through an official bank channel.

Explain the purpose of the account

It is important for the bank to understand why you need the account, what incoming payments are expected, and which countries the transactions involve. Salaries, household bills, investments and business all have different profiles. A brief, honest description is better than a general phrase such as ‘for everyday use’.

Choose your currencies, card, transfers and branch access. Compare not only the monthly fee, but also incoming payments, currency exchange, withdrawals, minimum balance requirements and account closure terms. Record the fee schedule with its date and source link.

For non-residents or new residents, the list of requirements may be more extensive. Do not substitute a dubious address for a lack of local history. Ask what alternative documents the bank accepts and obtain a response through official channels.

KYC as a coherent narrative

Your passport, address, tax residency, employment status and source of funds must all paint a coherent picture. Any discrepancy between your stated profession and a large transfer requires explanation. Prepare contracts, financial statements or sales documents in advance.

The source of wealth and the source of a specific payment are different matters. The former explains the accumulation of funds, whilst the latter explains the origin of the transaction. Do not send a random pile of statements without a table of contents or explanation.

The beneficial owner of a company must be disclosed down to the ultimate individual. A nominee structure does not exempt the company from verification. The corporate file must include details of activities, counterparties, expected turnover and the powers of signatories.

Submission and digital access

Check whether a visit is required and who is authorised to certify the documents. A private intermediary does not guarantee the account will be opened. Before sending your passport, check the branch address, the name of the staff member and that there is a secure upload channel.

Once the account is opened, check the name, IBAN, limits, contact details and recovery method. Set up strong authentication and do not give your code to a staff member over the phone. The bank will not ask you to provide a one-off password to prevent fraud.

Make a small test transfer to verify the recipient’s details. When receiving your salary, provide your bank details to your employer securely. Do not publish a statement showing your address and balance as proof of the account.

Rejection, blocking and complaints

The bank may decline an application or request further information as part of its risk assessment. This does not imply that the applicant is acting unlawfully, nor does it oblige another bank to accept the application. Clarify which details can be corrected without requiring the disclosure of internal models.

If a transaction is restricted, respond with supporting documents via the specified channel and keep a record of the reference number. Do not split the transfer or use someone else’s account to circumvent the checks. Such behaviour increases the risk.

If the dispute remains unresolved, make use of the internal complaints procedure and, subsequently, a competent external mechanism. Record the dates, amounts and responses. This article does not constitute financial advice and does not guarantee access to any specific product.

Record the date of each document submission and the secure channel through which it was sent. If the bank requests an update, clarify exactly which file is out of date and for which period a new one is required. This reduces the risk of resending unnecessary personal data and simplifies the investigation of any delays.
