Pink Slip in Cyprus: the visitor residence permit

Who the visitor permit is for, its restrictions, and how to prepare MVIS8, supporting documents, biometrics and renewal.

Pink Slip in Cyprus: the visitor residence permit

In brief: Pink Slip is the common name for a temporary visitor residence permit for third-country nationals. It is designed for residence as a visitor and does not permit economic activity in the Republic of Cyprus. Employment, study and other purposes use their own categories.

Who the visitor permit is for

The official category includes an autonomous visitor and certain dependent family members. The route must match the real purpose: visitor status cannot be used as a substitute for a work permit.

First check whether the applicant belongs under the visitor route or under the rules for a family member of a Cypriot, EU citizen, worker, investor or another separate category. The forms and evidence differ.

Entry and application

Entry must be lawful, using a valid travel document and the visa required. Form MVIS8 is submitted before the permitted stay expires to the relevant office with the current set of supporting documents.

On a first application, the person is registered in the Aliens Register and receives an ARC if not already registered. Biometrics and a signature are required for the card; a child under six provides a photograph only.

Duration, fees and examination

On the checked date, a first visitor permit is normally issued for one year and can be renewed while the conditions remain met. If the passport expires earlier, the card duration is limited under the Migration Department rules.

The official page lists €70 for issue or renewal and a further €70 for first registration in the Aliens Register. Examination is usually completed within four months for a sufficient file, but that is not a guarantee of an individual outcome.

Renewal, travel and refusal

Renewal requires fresh evidence and the current checklist. Monitor passport, insurance, accommodation and financial-document validity instead of waiting until the final day.

A long absence can cancel a temporary permit; the Migration Department explains return rules separately. If refused, the applicant receives a letter with reasons, and any next step must be assessed from that decision rather than generic online advice.

Checks before you apply

  • confirm that the purpose fits the visitor category;
  • download the current MVIS8 and supporting-document list;
  • check lawful entry and the remaining permitted stay;
  • prepare translations, certification, biometrics and payment;
  • check status-retention rules before travel or renewal.

Check whether the visitor category matches your purpose

A visitor permit is intended for residence without local employment, subject to the conditions of the category. First, describe your source of funds and your actual activities. Remote working, managing a company or providing services to clients may have immigration and tax implications that cannot be resolved by simply stating the nature of your income.

Do not base your plan on the assumption that any income from abroad is permissible. Prepare documentation regarding the source, regularity and availability of funds, and discuss complex scenarios with a specialist in the field. The immigration authority assesses the overall package and circumstances, not just the balance in the account.

For each family member, verify the basis and evidence of your relationship. Income and accommodation must cover the actual household in accordance with current requirements. If family members are applying on different dates, find out in advance how this affects the documentation and deadlines for dependent applicants.

Preparing for the initial application

Record your lawful entry, period of stay and the last safe date of validity. Booking an appointment for the future does not always guarantee the right to remain after your current authorisation expires. Obtain an official response if the available appointment slot extends beyond your current authorisation period, and do not rely on a verbal promise from an agent.

Gather your passport, entry documents, proof of address, financial documents, insurance, bank statements and family evidence in accordance with the current checklist. Check that documents are legalised and translated. An identical certificate issued too long ago or by the wrong authority may not meet the requirements.

Before submitting your application, make an inventory of the originals and copies. Check names, numbers and dates, especially if you have changed your passport. Pay only the prescribed fees via a verified channel and obtain a receipt with the case number.

Renewal and travel

Prepare your renewal in advance: not only must the form and photograph be updated, but also the evidence of continued compliance with the conditions. Your tenancy agreement, insurance and financial means must cover the relevant period. A previous successful application does not guarantee that the requirements and circumstances remain the same.

Before travelling whilst your application is being processed, check which document confirms your right to return and whether there are any restrictions on your absence. A receipt may be subject to specific conditions of use. The carrier and border authorities assess documents independently; having plenty of time at the airport does not compensate for a lack of valid entitlement.

Keep a record of your entries and exits. A prolonged absence affects not only your current status but also your future plans for continuous residence. Do not rely on your memory when reconstructing dates ahead of your next application; use tickets and official records instead.

If your circumstances have changed

A new job, divorce, the birth of a child, a change of address or a significant change in income require a review of your status. Do not conceal these facts until renewal. Find out whether notification, a new category or a separate application is required, and keep evidence of timely action.

If your application is refused, obtain a written decision stating the grounds, the timeframe and the appeal procedure. Do not resubmit the same application without analysing the reason for the refusal. If time is short, urgently assess the legality of your stay and the next permissible step with a qualified specialist.

Do not hand over your passport or bank access details to anyone who guarantees a result. A representative must have verifiable authorisation and a written scope of services. The final decision rests with the authorities; this article helps you manage your evidence but does not constitute individual legal advice.
