Cyprus appoints Ilias Anagnostopoulos to independent investigators team in Mafia State case

Nicosia, Cyprus. Criminologist Ilias Anagnostopoulos has officially joined the team of independent criminal investigators in the Mafia State case after the cabinet approved his appointment on Wednesday. He replaces Christos Mylonopoulos, who recused himself last week.

Cabinet approval and support

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the cabinet agreed that the team should receive all necessary assistance, including secretarial support and infrastructure. A fully equipped space has already been secured and staff has been made available to assist the investigators in their work.

Investigation team arrival

The rest of the team is expected to arrive in Cyprus early next week to begin the investigation based on the findings of the anti-corruption authority.

Comments on the appointment

Letymbiotis said any reservations expressed regarding Anagnostopoulos’ appointment were not linked to the mandate of the anti-corruption authority or the team of independent investigators. He added that the investigators should be allowed to begin their work as soon as possible, study the findings in depth and examine everything included.

Background to the case

The appointment of the independent investigators follows the completion of the anti-corruption authority’s investigation into allegations contained in journalist Makarios Drousiotis’ book Mafia State. The inquiry involved around 150 witnesses, approximately 200 hearings and hundreds of exhibits.
