Kouyoumdjian places 64th in Olympic giant slalom as Cyprus continues alpine skiing campaign

Bormio, Italy. Cypriot skier Yiannos Kouyoumdjian finished 64th in the men’s giant slalom on Saturday at the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, completing both runs on the Stelvio course in a combined time of 2:52.11.

Race results and conditions

The Cyprus Olympic Committee said the giant slalom featured 81 athletes, with 69 completing both runs, citing the difficulty of the course. Kouyoumdjian recorded 1:29.14 in the first run and completed the second run in more challenging weather conditions to secure 64th place overall.

Athlete reaction

“It was a tough race. I achieved my goal of completing both runs. The second run was a bit slower, but we’re all happy. Everything went well. Now we turn our focus to Monday’s slalom,” Kouyoumdjian said after finishing.

The committee described the performance as another milestone for Cypriot alpine skiing and noted Kouyoumdjian’s second consecutive Olympic appearance following the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. He is set to compete in the slalom on Monday, February 16.
