Larnaca, Cyprus. A seven-night literary retreat in Larnaca inspired by Elif Shafak’s 2021 novel The Island of Missing Trees has been included in National Geographic Traveller UK’s list of seven recommended literary retreats for 2026.
Cyprus itinerary
The retreat, titled “Fig trees and vine leaves”, appears alongside literary journeys to Provence, Yorkshire, Zermatt, Svalbard, the Nile and Morocco.
Shafak’s novel moves between Cyprus and London and follows Greek Cypriot Kostas and Turkish Cypriot Defne. The story addresses the island’s division, loss and inherited memories, with a fig tree among its narrators.
Guests stay at the Josephine Boutique Hotel in central Larnaca, near Finikoudes beach. The hotel has a rooftop swimming pool.
Activities and discussions
The itinerary allows time for reading, visiting Larnaca and going to the beach. Optional excursions include a guided walk through the Old Town, a boat trip and a visit to an archaeological park.
Participants gather over dinner to discuss The Island of Missing Trees. A separate evening, titled “A Book I Love”, invites travellers to discuss a personal favourite book.
Most participants travel alone and single occupancy is standard, while friends or couples may request twin rooms.
Dates and pricing
The remaining 2026 departure is scheduled for October 5. The seven-night package is advertised from £1,695 per person.
According to the holiday listing, the price includes a room for sole use, daily breakfast, three dinners with wine and water, ATOL-protected flights and airport transfers.
Reading-focused travel
Expedia Group’s Unpack ’26 research found that 91 per cent of travellers were interested in holidays centred on reading, relaxation and time with loved ones.
The study covered 24,000 adults in 18 countries. Pinterest searches for “book club retreat ideas” rose by 265 per cent, while reading-related terms in Vrbo reviews nearly tripled.
