Paphos steps up action against illegal electric scooter use

Paphos, Cyprus. The Paphos municipality and police will increase efforts to address the illegal use of electric scooters and other electric personal mobility devices following a meeting on Thursday between police officials and acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou.

Enforcement measures

Police will place particular emphasis on preventing unlicensed scooter rental companies from operating in the town. The municipality said it would use all legal means available to support the enforcement effort.

The police already have the authority to enforce the law and report violations, while the municipality is responsible for issuing licences to rental companies.

Permitted areas

The circulation of personal mobility devices is permitted only in areas provided for by law, including roads with a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour, cycle paths, cycle lanes and public paths where appropriate signage permits their use.

Electric scooters are prohibited in town squares and pedestrian streets, except for mobility scooters used by disabled people.

Reports filed

Paphos police have filed 132 reports this year concerning scooter rental companies operating illegally.
