Nicosia, Cyprus. Stargazers in Cyprus will be able to observe the Perseid meteor shower this month, with peak activity expected on August 12 and 13, according to Nicosia deputy mayor and astronomer Chrysanthos Fakas.
The shower began on July 17 and is due to continue until August 24, while a free astronomical event will be held in Kyperounda on August 12.
Viewing conditions
The highest number of meteors is expected to be visible during the peak days. The Perseids appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, from which the meteor shower takes its name.
The radiant point will be visible in the north-eastern evening sky. Observers are advised to look after 11pm, when it rises higher.
This year’s display is expected to benefit from a moonless sky on August 12, allowing meteors to be seen more clearly.
Other objects in the sky
Astronomy enthusiasts may also be able to observe the constellation of Scorpio, the red star Antares and the planet Venus.
The August full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will occur on August 28. A total solar eclipse will also take place on August 12, but it will not be visible from Cyprus.
Kyperounda event
The Astronomical Society of Cyprus, the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation and the Fakas School Observatory are organising a free astronomical evening with the Kyperounda community council.
The event will take place from 9pm to 11pm on August 12 at the courtyard of the Church of Ayios Arsenios in Kyperounda.
