Residents reject EAC timetable for relocating power line at Adonis II housing complex

Pano Polemidia, Cyprus. Residents of Koag’s Adonis II housing complex remained dissatisfied on Friday after the Electricity Authority of Cyprus outlined a phased plan to relocate an electricity line running adjacent to their homes. The proposals were presented at a meeting with EAC representatives, Polemidia mayor Andros Theodorou and a delegation of residents.

Meeting follows presidential intervention

The meeting took place after President Nikos Christodoulides intervened earlier this week, following concerns raised by residents during the foundation stone ceremony for the nearby Adonis III residential project.

Phased relocation plan

EAC spokeswoman Christina Papadopoulou said the authority proposed an interim solution involving the relocation of part of the existing overhead line by about 80 metres.

She said that part of the line crossing above the residential complex would be moved early next year, while a further section would be removed next September.

Permanent removal remains final plan

Papadopoulou said the final plan remains the complete removal of the line and its relocation about 1.5 kilometres away.

She said the project depends on a series of procedures, including road registration and approvals involving several state authorities.

According to Papadopoulou, once all preparations are complete, EAC will proceed quickly so that the line is entirely removed from above the homes.

Electromagnetic field measurements planned

The authority also plans to request electromagnetic field measurements from the University of Cyprus at both the existing installation and the proposed temporary route.

Papadopoulou said that although the distance involved in the temporary relocation may appear short, the difference in electromagnetic field measurements is significant, and the aim is to protect the residents living there.

Residents reject timetable

Residents rejected the proposed timetable, saying they have already waited years for a permanent solution.
