Nicosia, Cyprus. XeniArtSpace is presenting Women in Focus, an exhibition centered on representations of women in 20th-century photography. The exhibition runs until September 19.
Exhibition theme and approach
Women in Focus is dedicated to the depiction of women and presents a visual narrative spanning image, desire, identity and femininity. The exhibition frames the woman as muse, symbol, strength, mystery and cultural imprint through works that contributed to contemporary visual culture.
Photographers featured
The exhibition includes photographs associated with Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Horst P Horst and Cecil Beaton. It also features works by Ruth Bernhard, Flor Garduño, Robert Mapplethorpe, Terence Donovan, Rudolf Koppitz and Sebastião Salgado.
Collection and curation
All works are drawn from the collection of Vadim Levin, described as a collector of 20th-century photography, as well as a photographer, author and researcher. Curator and founder of XeniArtSpace Xenia Kulbachevskaya said the woman of the 20th century “was never a static image,” adding that the photographs continue to evoke emotion and encourage personal connections for viewers.
