The issue of the shops working on Wednesdays and Sunday remains open, despite of the decision of the District Court of Nicosia last week, which was in favor of the shop-owners.

The Parliament has filed an appeal against the decision of the President’s cabinet and the Supreme Court of Cyprus must make its decision in the next few days.

The issue concerns only big shops, such as shopping malls and supermarkets.

Currently, there is no clear legislation which regulates the shop’s opening hours.

Since July 2013, the Minister of Labour Mrs. Zeta Emilianidou was issuing a special permission which permitted the shops to remain open on Sundays and Wednesdays, which was renewable every 6 months.

The House of Representative however, by voting, has stripped Mrs. Emilianidou of such authority and argued that it is important to safeguard the interests of small shop and family business
