China backs active international role for Cyprus, ambassador says
China’s ambassador to Cyprus said the two countries could jointly implement a Chinese initiative to promote trust among civilisations.

Nicosia, Cyprus. China fully supports Cyprus taking an active international role, including through joint implementation of a Chinese initiative to promote trust among civilisations, Ambassador Yundong Yang said on Wednesday at the Cyprus Forum.
Diplomatic ties
Yang said Cyprus and China share a commitment to multilateralism and UN principles, and described Cyprus as having a “very important role in the region”. He said the two countries, which are celebrating 55 years of diplomatic relations, had built a relationship based on trust.
“Cyprus is committed to support the One China policy. We are committed to support Cyprus’ efforts to maintain its security and territorial independence,” he said, adding that the countries support each other on issues of concern.
Yang said Cyprus had earned international respect through its role in evacuations from conflict areas and its provision of humanitarian assistance. He also described it as a “safe harbour” in the Mediterranean and a “very popular tourist destination”.
Referring to China’s global initiative, presented last year, Yang said: “We would like to implement it together.”
Trade opportunities
Yang said there were many opportunities for trade, describing China as having the “second largest import market for 17 consecutive years”. He cited its population of 1.4 billion, including 400 million middle-income people, and said China’s imports rose by 20 per cent in the first five months of 2026, faster than its exports.
He added that China’s service sector had grown by 65 per cent over the past five years, while outbound tourism and the number of students studying abroad had also increased.
