Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday that issues of sovereignty and national dignity leave no room for concessions, as Cyprus marked the 86th anniversary of October 28, 1940 with parades and commemorative events across the island.

Lessons of 1940

Christodoulides spoke to reporters after the Ochi Day parade in Nicosia. He referred to Greece’s historic resistance to fascist Italy during the Second World War and stressed that the values defended in 1940 remain relevant today.

He said the epic of 1940 carries many messages, but that he wished to focus on one: “when it comes to sovereignty and dignity, there can be no compromises or concessions”. In his words, the Greeks showed, whatever the cost, that no such compromises are possible on these matters.

The president added that honouring the anniversary also means following the example the Greeks set in 1940, adapted to present-day circumstances.

Cypriot contribution to the Allied effort

Christodoulides also drew attention to the role of Cypriots in the Allied war effort. He noted that almost 20,000 of them fought alongside Greece and the Allied forces in the Second World War, and that many lost their lives. He described their sacrifices as an important part of the anniversary’s significance.

Parade and ceremonies

The president congratulated all who took part in Wednesday’s parade, including students, representatives of occupied municipalities and communities, and organised groups. He also welcomed the Lyceum of Greek Women from Kavala and the Corfu Philharmonic, both of which joined the commemorations.

Earlier, Christodoulides attended the official church service for the anniversary and then took the salute at the parade in Nicosia. He ended by sending his wishes to Greeks in Cyprus, in Greece and around the world.
