Larnaca, Cyprus. EVOHK artist-run space will host Circus Box from October 3 to 16 as part of Visual Voices’ Vis-à-Vis Nicosia programme. The collaborative exhibition and performance project brings together Gabriella Thoma, JugglingCyprus and QuantumCircus.

Exhibition and opening

Circus Box will combine immersive installations, rare circus objects, visual archives of the Cyprus Circus Initiatives and circus-inspired art. It will turn EVOHK into a mini Carpa, inviting visitors to explore how circus arts shape perceptions of space, movement and community.

The opening on Saturday, October 3, at 7.30pm will feature two performances, followed by fire playing at the beach. The installation will remain on display until October 16.

Participants and community projects

Thoma is a cultural anthropologist, geographer and juggler interested in circus art as a tool for social change. She returned to Cyprus from Barcelona two years ago and is completing a thesis in Human Geography and Spatial Planning.

JugglingCyprus is a grassroots initiative that uses a public parking lot beside Larnaca’s youth-built skate park as a weekly meeting place for juggling, flow arts and community-building. QuantumCircus began two years ago with the creation of a circus act and aims to develop circus art and discipline in Cyprus. Its participants work to bring the island’s two communities closer through events on both sides of the divide.

Discussion and juggling sessions

A roundtable on October 9 will examine circus art as a tool for social intervention and its role in contemporary Cyprus. Speakers will include Thoma, Andria Spyrou of QuantumCircus and Jean Paul of JugglingCyprus. EVOHK founder Eirene Constantinou will moderate.

Juggling jams and training sessions open to those who want to take part will be held at SK8 Park Larnaca on October 6 and 13.

The exhibition is open at EVOHK on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 3pm to 7pm. Further information is available at www.evohkart.wixsite.com/arts/projects/circus-box.
