Nicosia, Cyprus. A document listing convergences reached so far in talks on the Cyprus problem is expected to be completed within days, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday after meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.

He said discussions between the two leaders continued on methodology, substance and confidence-building measures, with common understanding on some issues and differing approaches on others.

Document in final stage

Christodoulides said the document was in its final stage, according to the information available to him.

“According to the information we have, it is in the very final stage. It is a matter of days for it to be completed, and we will see how the United Nations will manage it,” he said.

He added that, once the document is ready, there could be a joint meeting in New York, either with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres or his personal envoy, at leaders’ or negotiators’ level. He said such a meeting was not certain.

Further meetings planned

Christodoulides described Wednesday’s meeting with Erhurman as short but substantial.

He said another leaders’ meeting is expected next week, most likely on Wednesday or Friday. It will be preceded by a meeting between Greek Cypriot chief negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Erhurman’s undersecretary, Mehmet Dana.

The president said the meetings between the two leaders are a continuation of previous discussions, as are the meetings held by their negotiators.

“We are not starting from scratch in the next meeting,” he said, adding that the issues under discussion are specific and that talks will continue where disagreements remain.

UN envoy’s contact with Guterres

Christodoulides also confirmed that UN Cyprus problem envoy Maria Angela Holguin was due to hold a telephone conversation with Guterres later on Wednesday.

Holguin was unable to travel to Cyprus or New York this week because of health issues, he said.

Asked whether he was satisfied with discussions on the methodology of talks and the substance of the Cyprus problem, Christodoulides said the issues were clear regarding how to move forward and create conditions for the resumption of talks.
