Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus has more than 150 deep-tech start-ups and has received almost €1 billion in competitive research and innovation funding over the past decade, according to ecosystem mapping presented at the University of Cyprus.

Research and commercialisation

The findings were unveiled at the 7th DeepTech CY Meetup, held on September 23 at the university’s Faculty of Engineering. It was the first time the community event had taken place inside a university, bringing the discussion to an institution producing research that the ecosystem aims to commercialise.

Students, researchers, professors, founders and investors gathered to examine how scientific work carried out in Cyprus could develop into commercially viable companies.

Opening the event, Faculty of Engineering Dean Marina Neophytou outlined the faculty’s ambition to bring research closer to entrepreneurship and industry. She pointed to progress in recent years and said industry and entrepreneurship should increasingly support students alongside the faculty’s academic mission.

Ecosystem mapping

Dionysis Partsinevelos of venture capital firm 33East presented findings from the firm’s year-long mapping exercise. It identified more than 150 deep-tech start-ups in Cyprus, active in fields including health and biotechnology, energy and climate, applied artificial intelligence, robotics, defence and space.

The meetup series was launched earlier in 2026 by Andrei Yarantsaeu and Oleg Reshetnikov as a grassroots community event for people building technology on the island. Partsinevelos and Evangelia Athanasiou, Ventures Associate at Plug and Play Cyprus, have since joined as co-organisers. The latest edition was also supported by Cyprus Seeds, one of the island’s main research commercialisation platforms.
