Nicosia, Cyprus. Relations between Cyprus and France are at their “highest level ever”, the presidential palace said on Tuesday, citing the countries’ strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across several sectors.

Strategic partnership

The presidential palace said a historic relationship had been upgraded to a strategic partnership, with specific policies and tangible results.

It said cooperation between the two countries was constantly evolving at multiple levels, with particular emphasis on defence and security, energy, connectivity, education and culture.

Cyprus and France also share a common approach to Europe’s role in the world and the need to strengthen its strategic autonomy, it said.

Agreement signed in December

The strategic partnership was signed by President Nikos Christodoulides and French President Emmanuel Macron in December last year.

Macron described the agreement as an “important step” and thanked Christodoulides for “the trust you place in our country”.

He said the agreement underscored the strength of bilateral relations and their commitment to being more present alongside Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

Christodoulides said the signing marked a highly significant chapter in relations between Cyprus and France.

Cooperation priorities

Christodoulides said the agreement declared the two countries’ determination to elevate bilateral cooperation through a structured and results-oriented mechanism.

He described it as a clear political statement and a tangible expression of the strategic nature of the partnership, setting out a shared vision and concrete priorities for the years ahead.

The presidential palace said the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Cyprus and France had benefited both countries, the European Union and the wider region.

French presence in the region

Macron visited Cyprus with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis days after the island was hit by an Iranian-made drone in March.

France also deployed the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, among other naval vessels, to the vicinity of Cyprus.
