Nicosia, Cyprus. Household debt in Cyprus totalled €20 billion at the end of June 2026, or 53 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), according to data the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) published on Friday. Debt held by non-financial companies stood at €41.7 billion, equal to 111 per cent of GDP.

Decline since 2016

The CBC said household indebtedness has dropped by 65 per cent compared with December 2016. Over the same period, the sector of non-financial companies recorded a 95 per cent fall in its ratio of debt to GDP. The central bank’s data point to a significant reduction in borrowing in both sectors.

Even so, companies remain much more indebted than households. Their liabilities exceed the value of the country’s yearly economic output.

Household assets

Household financial assets amounted to €67.1 billion at the end of June 2026, well above the debt owed by the sector. Cash, deposits and loans made up 54 per cent of the total. Shares accounted for 25 per cent, other financial assets for 17 per cent, and debt securities for the remaining 4 per cent.

Corporate assets and debt

Financial assets held by non-financial companies reached €77.9 billion at the end of June. Shares formed the largest component at 37 per cent, followed by other financial assets at 33 per cent and cash and deposits at 24 per cent. Loans represented 5 per cent and debt securities 0.6 per cent.

The sector’s outstanding debt of €41.7 billion, equal to 111 per cent of GDP, was marginally lower than in the previous quarter. The comparison with December 2016 shows a 95 per cent fall in the ratio, which the CBC described as a substantial improvement in the sector’s indebtedness.

Scope of the figures

The data give an overview of the financial position of households, businesses and institutional investors. The last group includes insurance companies, investment funds and pension funds.
