In cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, the Cyprus police is working on the creation of new Coast Guard service to patrol the waters around the island. It was already announced that the new unit will be responsible for prevention of terrorist attacks and participation in rescue mission.

The Coast Guard will also take over several operations, which are now controlled by the Port Authority and Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

The proposal, which outlines all responsibilities will be directed to the Parliament in this next few months.

Currently, Cyprus is using the Marine Police and Civil defence coast guards for protecting and patrolling of its waters and EEZ.
