Ayios Georgios, Cyprus. The funeral of Saliha Ozkol, who was killed by her ex-husband at her home on Monday morning, was held on Tuesday afternoon in Ayios Georgios near Trikomo, where she lived.

The north’s ‘interior minister’ Dursun Oguz, Turkish Cypriot Trikomo mayor Hasan Sadikoglu and opposition CTP leader Sila Usar Incirli attended the funeral.

Calls for action against violence

Incirli said that “femicides are political” and warned that femicides and violence against women would continue unless a comprehensive system was established and effectively implemented to protect women, prevent violence and combat its various forms.

She said that establishing such a system, enforcing laws, allocating necessary resources, ensuring institutions function and holding those responsible for every loss accountable were political responsibilities.

Previous court cases and protection order

Ozkol’s ex-husband reportedly seriously injured himself after returning to his home in Famagusta and was taken to hospital.

According to news website Bugun Kibris, Ozkol had been subjected to violence by her then husband in 2024 and was knocked unconscious by him.

He appeared before the Turkish Cypriot Famagusta district court on July 21 last year on charges of trespassing, assault, illegal possession of a knife, battery and failure to comply with a restraining order obtained by Ozkol.

On August 15 last year, the Turkish Cypriot Trikomo family court issued a new order barring him from coming within 200 metres of Ozkol or communicating with her in any way. He was also sentenced to three months in prison in the assault case.
