Tehran, Iran. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz rose slightly on Wednesday despite the continuing standoff between the United States and Iran, according to Kpler data, as markets monitored Iran-Oman talks on the waterway.

Visible commodity vessel transits at Hormuz totalled 10 on Wednesday, up from eight on Tuesday but below the 10-day moving average of about 15 vessels.

Hormuz vessel movements

Two medium-range fuel tankers, a liquefied petroleum gas carrier, a Panamax-sized tanker and three handymax-sized tankers entered the strait from the Gulf of Oman.

A medium-range fuel tanker, a bitumen tanker and a bulk carrier exited the waterway from the Gulf.

Iran and Oman were still working on the details of an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source said on Wednesday. The comments followed a statement by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that the two countries had agreed on how to share the waterway and its revenue.

Tanker incident

A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire that was later extinguished, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said early on Thursday.

Bab el-Mandeb traffic

Traffic slowed for a second consecutive day at the Bab el-Mandeb strait, another key waterway.

Kpler data showed that 19 commodity vessels passed through Bab el-Mandeb on Wednesday, down from 24 the previous day. The figure included six tankers exiting the strait, among them a very large crude carrier.

Some vessels may be travelling through the waterways with their transponders switched off and may not be included in the counts.
