Hybrids take 53 per cent of Cyprus passenger car registrations in January–September 2026
Cystat figures show hybrids increased their share of Cyprus passenger car registrations, while fully electric cars lost ground and overall vehicle registrations rose.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Hybrids made up 53 per cent of passenger saloon cars registered in Cyprus during January–September 2026, compared with 44 per cent a year earlier, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat). Fully electric cars, meanwhile, accounted for a smaller share.
Shift in fuel preferences
Cystat reported that fully electric vehicles represented 4.2 per cent of passenger car registrations, against 4.7 per cent in January–September 2025. Petrol models accounted for 34.8 per cent, down from 42.8 per cent, while diesel vehicles took an 8 per cent share, compared with 8.5 per cent a year earlier.
The rise in hybrids’ share reflected their expanding presence in the Cyprus vehicle market. Separately, a Eurostat report showed that hybrid and electric vehicles continued to gain ground across the European Union, together accounting for almost 40 per cent of cars manufactured there in 2025.
Nine-month registrations rise
Cystat’s figures put total motor vehicle registrations for January–September 2026 at 43,890, an increase of 9.1 per cent from the 40,212 recorded a year earlier.
Passenger saloon registrations reached 34,156, rising 9 per cent from 31,325. Used vehicles accounted for 23,635 of that total, or 69.2 per cent, while new cars numbered 10,521, representing 30.8 per cent.
Rental car registrations moved in the opposite direction, dropping 17.1 per cent to 3,780 from 4,559, according to Cystat.
September records a decline
Despite the increase over the nine-month period, Cystat recorded a year-on-year fall of 3.9 per cent in September’s total motor vehicle registrations. The monthly figure stood at 5,326, against 5,544 in September 2025.
