Nicosia, Cyprus. The justice ministry said on Thursday that the nationwide police operation Plegma is a significant step against organised crime, especially drug trafficking networks. Police reported earlier the same day that 26 people had been taken into custody.

Ministry statement

The ministry commended the professionalism and dedication of the officers taking part. The operation is coordinated by the newly established directorate for combating organised crime.

The ministry promised ongoing backing in the form of extra personnel, equipment and legal measures, aimed at reinforcing action against criminal networks. It said protecting the public, particularly younger generations, remains a priority and that operations will go on.

The arrests

According to police, the 26 individuals were detained in a large operation targeting suspected drug trafficking networks. The operation, codenamed Plegma, which means network, came after a long investigation that began in February following a major drug seizure in Nicosia.

The February seizure

On February 19, officers stopped a vehicle with two people inside. They found 11,480 firecrackers, as well as cannabis and cocaine held by one of the occupants.

Searches connected to the driver led to the discovery of 167kg of cannabis, 62kg of cocaine and 4.5kg of cannabis resin. Authorities also reported seizing firearms, explosive devices, cash and electronic cigarettes believed to contain drugs.

Five people remain in custody in connection with this case. Police said the investigation revealed wider links among members of the network.
