Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca Film Festival will return for its second edition from August 27 to 30, with film screenings, live music, workshops and walking tours across parks, squares and neighbourhoods.
Organised by the Larnaca Film Club and supported by the deputy ministry of culture and Larnaca Municipality, the festival will include the Common Ground Cinema Experience section, organised with Larnaka2030 and the Batroun Mediterranean Film Festival.
Opening event
The festival will open on Thursday, August 27, at Larnaca Municipal Garden. The Aurora String Quartet, under the artistic direction of Artemisia Vassiliou, will perform musical themes from world cinema at 8pm.
The first festival screening, La Belle Époque, will follow at 8.30pm.
Workshops and walking tour
On the second day, the Larnaca House of Letters and Arts will host the Film & Literature: A hands-on workshop for educators at 9.30am. The Greek-language workshop, led by Maria Leonida, will examine the direction and screenplay of a film based on a book.
Participants will also learn basic principles of coordinating a film crew and film their own version. The workshop is free, but requires online registration because places are limited.
The One Neighbourhood-Many Faces walking tour, led by Andria Efthymiou, will begin at 6.45pm from Athens Avenue, in front of the Lion of Venice statue. Participants will explore the revitalised Tourkomahala area before the day’s screening at Mesogeios Park.
The family film Dancing Queen will be screened at Mesogeios Park at 8pm.
Common Ground Cinema Experience
On August 29, the House of Letters and Arts will host the One Object, Five Perspectives film workshop for teenagers aged 11 to 15. Starting at 10am, participants will work in small groups and stage photoshoots using symbols and stereotypes drawn from film and television.
The workshop will be held in Greek, is free and requires registration.
Later that day, Salina Park will host the Common Ground Cinema Experience, with parallel outdoor screenings at three locations. The programme includes Ebb & Flow, What If They Bomb Here Tonight?, One Last Time, Crow Man and There Is No Other Cyprus.
A discussion with filmmakers will follow the screening of the documentary There Is No Other Cyprus, in collaboration with PRIO Cyprus.
Final day
The final day will begin with the Larnaca in the Foreground walking tour, led by Andria Efthymiou, departing Europe Square at 6.45pm.
The Cypriot film Thank You for Banking With Us will be screened at Zouhouri Square at 8pm. Kontovourkis & Co will perform a closing concert at 9.30pm.
