Limassol Seafront Residents All Live Close to Bus Stops, Walkably Study Finds

A new Walkably study finds that everyone living along Limassol's seafront from the Old Port to Dasoudi can reach a public transport stop on foot in five minutes, though it does not assess service quality.

Limassol, Cyprus. A new Walkably study has found that every resident of the seafront area between the Old Port and Dasoudi lives five minutes or less on foot from a public transport stop. The analysis comes as discussions continue on improving the city’s transport network, including the possible introduction of a tram.

Seafront compared with the rest of the city

The study estimates that 2,762 people live in the seafront area. In the remainder of Limassol, the share of residents with a five-minute walk to a stop is 86.9 per cent.

Across the whole city, whose population the study puts at 103,812, 87.2 per cent of people live within that five-minute distance.

The median walking time to a stop is two minutes on the seafront and 2.7 minutes elsewhere in the city. The difference shrinks at ten minutes: 97.8 per cent of residents citywide can reach a stop within that time, compared with all seafront residents, according to Walkably founder Raian Pollock.

How the study was carried out

Pollock explained that the researchers measured real walking distances along streets and paths instead of straight-line distances. The study takes into account factors such as traffic and slope.

It does not factor in pavement width or road safety.

Limits of the findings

Living close to a stop does not ensure a dependable service. Pollock noted that the study looks at distance and not at bus frequency or routes.

He added that the research, which draws on Eurostat 2021 data, recognises that the frequency of services at stops would need to be evaluated to judge how good the service is.
