Male mouflon clashes increase ahead of Cyprus mating season
The Cyprus Game and Fauna Service says male mouflon fights intensify before mating season, sometimes leaving animals entangled or injured.
Nicosia, Cyprus. Fights between male mouflons are increasing as autumn approaches, with the animals competing for dominance ahead of the mating season. The Cyprus Game and Fauna Service says the clashes can result in serious injuries when the animals’ large horns become entangled.
Entanglement risks
The service said dead mouflons are sometimes found on cliffs following such incidents.
When animals become entangled, officers intervene to free them and ensure their safe return to the wild. In some cases, mouflons manage to free themselves.
Rare cooperation
A recent video showed two male mouflons with tangled horns cooling down before working free and drinking water.
The Cyprus Game and Fauna Service described the incident as a rare display of cooperation.
