OPOK urges stronger wildfire prevention measures as Cyprus enters high-risk period

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus (OPOK) on Monday called on the state to strengthen forest-fire preparedness, stressing that prevention is a shared responsibility.

Prevention and preparedness

OPOK said forest protection must begin before smoke is visible through planning, timely clearing of hazardous areas, management of dry vegetation, maintenance of firebreaks and readiness of relevant services.

Wildfire risk

The federation said Cyprus is entering a high-risk period for wildfires, with high temperatures and strong winds creating extreme threats, particularly following increased rainfall this year.

Impact of fires

“Every time a forest burns, not only trees are lost,” OPOK said, noting that ecosystems, wildlife, property and community heritage are also affected.

Climate change

OPOK said climate change is increasing the need for stronger prevention, surveillance and rapid response, adding that a small act of responsibility can prevent a major disaster.
